I would be the first to admit that I play my music too loud. A lot of the time. Although this is mainly in my car. I like to play it offensively loud with the windows down. This is fun when stuck in traffic jams on the motorway. However, most of the time the most annoyance passers by get is a few seconds of heavy bass or guitar distortion with some shouting.
This is different when you live in student flats with little to no insulation between floors and you can hear your neighbours conversations if they have slightly raised voices nearly as clearly as if you were speaking to them yourself. I seem to be followed by people who play incredibly bad music very loudly. The first year of university I had an idiot on the floor below me who liked to play Craig David so loud that my concrete floor shook. I'm fairly certain that Craig David wasn't even approved of when his music was first released. In my flat at the moment I am listening to David Gray and Journey, although I'm fairly certain I haven't requested either of them. I don't even have decent speakers to retaliate appropriately with.
I suppose I just have to think wistfully of a time in the future when I can afford a flat with decent sound proofing, to protect my own ears and also those of my neighbours who almost certainly will not approve of my music choice when I get my hands on a pair of speakers, or a detached house. Hopefully the flat at least is not too far in the future.
